Who am I? In seeking God’s face it becomes apparent that living the Christian lifestyle requires that you check yourself. In other words, KNOW YOUR IDENTITY.
"If you identify with the world, consider your identity to be in a crisis". -Clifton Boudreaux Jr.
Without an identity in Christ, you won’t: commit to Him, you won’t pursue him, you won’t keep Him first, you won’t desire His purpose for you, and the list goes on and on. The bottom line is, you won’t do, nor desire to do, the things of God thus limiting the relationship you can have with Him. This is often the reason why we find ourselves wanting to serve God, wanting to live right but never actually doing it; we can’t identify with Him. The bible clearly states to choose ye this day who you will serve, that you can only serve one master, that HE will spew you out of his mouth for he hates lukewarm. In other words, you do this God’s way, no highway option. Our “Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth”(BIBLE) tells us “If any man serve me, let him follow me;”(John 12:26) so if you’re going to be in the church be in the church and if you’re going to do your own thing then just know what awaits you on the other side. The verse before that(John 12:25) tells us that if we love our lives we’ll lose it, so you can live your life, just not how your flesh would like to. You CANNOT find your identity in this world. Its one thing to be able to identify with people who are in the world because you were once in that place yourself, but to find your Identity in anything other than Christ is to throw away a relationship that you could have with him.
In order to find your identity in Christ you must first start with a commitment to live for him. Next is putting that commitment to action, pursuing God, chasing after him. In your pursuit comes responsibility, the responsibility to continue on the path that God has lain before you. That responsibility should be followed by consistency always giving God the glory in your worship, your praise, and your prayer whether you “feel” like it or not. As your identity shifts to be in Christ you should come to recognize that your flesh is to be subject to spiritual influence, not the other way around. On this earth we identify by culture as well as appearance so consider the above listed to be the “culture” of our identities in Christ. Next is putting on, wearing your identity. Modest apparel that reflects your churches guidelines (Christ) is what you should be wearing outside the comfort of your own home. If your identity is in Christ, then people should be able to see Christ in you. They know there is something different about you simply because your identity is different from anyone they’ve ever encountered, thus the Great commission of Acts 13:47 begins in your life. Since there is no in-between and obviously hell is not on your wishlist, you can’t find your identity in the world and expect to find yourself in Christ; it’s not going to happen. Having a worldly identity will cause you to question truth, and even standards that you yourself stood for once upon a time. Commit, pursue, be responsible, be consistent, recognize, and you’ll find your identity in Jesus.
