I don’t like art, well certain parts of it. But after having to learn how to do it and the different things about it, I’ve learned to appreciate it more. See, the one thing that I’ve actually learned from being in Art class and having to draw and sketch and sculpt and paint, etc. is that the artist has the power to make, create, and shape his or her piece into whatever they want it to be. It’s their choice. It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone besides themselves. If they want a pink horse with a curly purple mane, then fine! Or orange grass, a pink tree, and a 15 ft see through gate, then so be it! Art is basically people being able to express themselves in whatever way they see fit, so that the world can get even a little snippet of what other people think or have to say about something. It’s not right and it’s not wrong, it just IS.
That is a beautiful thing!
People appreciate artist because they are able to capture one moment, one second, and make it their own. We learn so much about people’s thoughts, lives, and feelings it’s as if we know them personally. It’s like we are all great friends sharing a laugh or an inside joke. It’s similar to having a personal relationship with the artist all from their work. We not only know what the artist put into their work, but a small portion of ourselves goes into the piece as well.
The feeling you get out of that is how we are to God. There’s a story in the Bible about the potter’s wheel (Jer. 18:1-18). The potter has a piece of clay and it’s gooey, sticky, and no shape or form whatsoever. But after a while, that gooey and sticky piece of clay begins to take a form. The Potter has a specific reason for molding his clay a certain way for a certain purpose. In a way, the clay is us (humans). We start off without any shape or form, but after a while, we become what God had intended us to become all along!
There is no one specific way to look, to act or to be in this world. But that’s the beauty of it, isn’t it? We are all able to be individuals, much like the clay on the potter’s wheel. No one pot, he has ever made, looks EXACTLY the same. I’d bet my precious life on that. Not one has the same shape, size, amount of grooves, or purpose. They were all made to the potter’s liking and design- as we are to God.
When we try to change ourselves- physically, mentally, spiritually, or emotionally- we are telling God that He made us the wrong way. “God I am not supposed to do this or look this way. You messed up big time Dude!” That is what we are telling God. How do you tell the person who made you that they messed up? That’s like telling Judge Judy she can’t talk while you’re talking in HER courtroom. (Yeah, right like that’s going to work… -_-)
The whole point of being here is to worship God. That’s all we have to do-God does everything else. He’s your personal body guard, He’s your landlord, He’s your boss at work, and He’s everything and more for you because He loves you. Why would He create you if He didn’t love you? You are God’s self portrait. You were made in the image of Him, so if you don’t like yourself, then sweetie, how do you feel about God? Yes, we are human and we make mistakes, it’s in our nature to do so. But that doesn’t mean to just go all crazy and World War III over something that is not your control whatsoever.
All of the make-up, plastic surgery, jewelry, piercings, tattoos, etc…It’s not right. I once had a wise old lady tell me “Baby, if God didn’t make you with it, then it ain’t s’posed to be on you- ya hear?” I brushed it off at first when she said that because I thought I understood what she was saying. I thought, “Oh, ok. Don’t do anything crazy and I’ll be fine in life.” But I missed the whole thing. She wasn’t only saying things physically-though that is a min component. She was saying anything I do to myself, whether it is spiritual, physical, or emotional… it affects me as a whole person. I want to do the right thing by people and well as by God.
Of course, no-one can compare to Him…not even close, but we can all try to show Him our love for Him as The Creator, ultimate sacrifice, savior, and all of the above. God loves us.
We are His creation.
We are His artwork.
We are Him!
And that is a pretty good start compared to some other things that we are…but that’s a story for another day.
